I assume that it varies depending on what sort of deal you have but what’s a typical percentage? If you fancy breaking down the CD cost into what would go to the retailer, label etc. then I’d be really interested to know. Do artists selling CDs at gigs take a larger percentage of sales?

Do recording artists record every song at full length? I was wondering if they have to record the whole song at once or if they take the best from certain sessions and run them together.

I’m writing an article about the current state of the music industry, and I need some definitive facts. Does anyone know how much recording artists make per CD on average (to clarify, recording artists that are signed to one of the major record labels). Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought it was a very very small amount (and that the major labels take the bulk of the revenue). Also, if you supply an answer, I need to see where you got your information (so i can include citations in the article).

For instance, when a singer or band go into the studio to record, is it entirely down to the record company, the producer(s), or is it standard practice that the artist themselves will retain demo tapes or even pressed copies of the music? I recently obtained a rare cd by the UK group Saint Etienne, of cuts taken from old demo recordings and unreleased tracks. Is it unusual that a band are able to keep hold of such recordings, or do they generally have to purchase copies like the average punter?
