Should record labels take more responsibility for drug addicted artists?

Should the labels who manage people like Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty try to do more to get them back on track? Should they be tougher?

I don’t remember the last time either of the aforementioned artists performed well and they do a disservice to their fans. They are both immensely talented, but they throw the support people give them back in their faces.

Would it be appropriate for the label to drop them as a statement that they don’t condone the use of drugs and expect their artists to show some respect to fans?

Do the major record labels still sign unknown artists?

I’m in a band and we are pretty awesome. Is it possible to get a record contract with a major label without having to tour incessantly for a very long time? What’s the fastest way to a major contract, as a band, and as a singer/songwriter?

Do they all just get lucky by knowing someone, or do they submit demo’s like saps like me? Basically, what I’m asking is this: What should I be doing to get my music out there?
