Why do people think that record sales say anything about an artists talent?

It doesn’t take a look at Talib Kweli, one of the best rappers by far he sold only 60, 000 in one week. But does that mean he’s a bad rapper? No. Same with Nas he doesn’t come close to selling a million but he’s the best rapper out by far.

If anything Record sales show the incompetence of the American people when it comes to hip-hop.

I was wondering about this the other day: let’s say that I take a bunch of old CD’s into a used “buy/sell” CD store and someone else eventually buys my old cd’s. Do the record companies and artists receive any sort of royalty profits from those used CD sales?

What sort of percentage royalties do recording artists get from CD sales?

I assume that it varies depending on what sort of deal you have but what’s a typical percentage? If you fancy breaking down the CD cost into what would go to the retailer, label etc. then I’d be really interested to know. Do artists selling CDs at gigs take a larger percentage of sales?
