What is auto-tune (used for recording songs)?

I keep on hearing about auto-tune but I’m still not quite sure what it is. Can anybody help me out?

Also, I know it’s used when artist record in-studio. But does it work live? Like can they pull it onstage and plug the mic into auto-tune?

University Music’s presentation of “Songs from Glee” opened last night to a standing room only audience in the Fine Arts Theatre on the UOG campus.

Anyone know any songs recorded by country music artists that have a little cajun style to them?
