What if a record label just signs a band without public notice ?

What i mean by that is, if there was a band, and not that many people have heard of them, and only got like 1000 friends on myspace and they sound really good and creative and a record label wants to sign them, how do they gain popularity, what does the Label really do ?…

im in a similar boat, you have to do most of the work your self. the label takes care of tax issues and etc, but you have to book your shows, you have to promote and make public appearances on time and sell your cd’s out the trunk, not the album but a sampler, sort of like a mixtape. use your imagination, and make it work!

that exact thing happened to MGMT..their very first album was released on Sony records– not bad for an unknown indie band from brooklyn…the label takes care of basic marketing: things like getting radio airplay, promos, tours, etc..the label is the one making money off them so you can be sure they will propmote the hell out of them
